History of the Internet

Goes back to the early 1960’s. JCR Licklider at MIT called it the “Galactic Network” in a 1962 paper. He was head of DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency)

It is a way for computers to talk to one another, and a way of allowing two or more people to communicate using a computer network. The first uses were for the United States Military.

January 1, 1983 is considered by many to be the official birthday of the internet. It is when the language for computers to “speak” with each other became one standard. (TCP/IP) The 1990’s brought about the internet that we know today.

History of Web Browsers

Before 1993 there really weren’t any browsers. In 1993 Mosaic was first browser to allow images embedded in the text.

1994 Netscape Navigator began using an improved version of Mosaic.

1995 Internet Explorer debuted at Microsoft’s answer to web browsers.

2003 Apple debuted its Safari Web browser.

Methods of Communication on the Internet

  1. Social Networking. It is the use of social media to connect with family, friends, customers, etc. Facebook is the most popular network. Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest are other popular social networking sites.
  2. E-Mail. E-mail is a text based method of person to person, or person to a group of people. It goes back to the 1970’s with the Department of Defense agencies using UNIX machines. In 1996 the first webmail known as Hotmail was released. GMail was released in 2004.
  3. Wikis and Blogs. Wikis and Blogs are web 2.0 technologies that are used in classrooms. A blog is a type of a journal where viewers can comment on an entry but are not able to modify the original entry. A Wiki on the hand can be modified by the visitor. Wikipedia comes to mind when speaking of Wiki’s. Anyone can modify a specific topic in Wikipedia.
  4. Podcast and Webcasts. A webcast is broadcasting over the internet that uses on-line streaming. A webcast requires a flash enabled web browser and is a live stream over the internet. YouTube has a method of webcasting. A podcast requires specific software and are downloaded to a specific web site.
  5. Streaming Media. YouTube again is the best example of streaming media. People can create their own media and have their own YouTube channel with pretty much any topic one can think of. Over the past three or four years I have become a YouTube junkie. What do you think of YouTube?
